Australian Energy Regulator

The Australian Energy Regulator (AER) regulates energy markets and networks under national energy market legislation and rules. Its functions, which mostly relate to energy markets in eastern and southern Australia, include:

  • setting the prices charged for using energy networks (electricity poles and wires and gas pipelines) to transport energy to customers
  • monitoring wholesale electricity and gas markets to ensure suppliers comply with the legislation and rules, and taking enforcement action where necessary
  • regulating retail energy markets in the ACT, South Australia, Tasmania (electricity only), New South Wales and Queensland. This includes enforcing compliance with retail legislation; authorising retailers to sell energy; approving retailers’ policies for dealing with customers in hardship; administering a national retailer of last resort scheme; reporting on retailer performance, educating consumers and small businesses about their energy rights and managing the energy price comparison website – Energy Made Easy.
  • providing general requirements under the Retail Rules for life support registration.

Australin Energy Markert Operator (AEMO) draws together the functions carried out by its six founding entities, incorporating management of the National Electricity Market and the retail and wholesale gas markets of eastern and southern Australia.

Australian Gas Association (AGA) provides complete certification services for all gas appliances and gas components to be sold and used within Australia.

Australian and New Zealand Ombudsman Association

The Australian and New Zealand Ombudsman Association (ANZOA) is the peak body for Ombudsmen in Australia and New Zealand.

Energy Networks Association

The Energy Networks Association (ENA) represents gas and electricity distribution businesses throughout Australia.

The Energy Supply Association of Australia (ESAA) represents national energy supply businesses in their relationships with government, regulatory bodies, the media, community organisations and business customer representative bodies.

Queensland Competition Authority

Queensland Competition Authority (QCA) is an independent body that oversees pricing in the gas and electricity industries in Queensland as well as the National Energy Retail Law (Queensland) Regulation 2014, Electricity Distribution Network Code and Gas Distribution Network Code.
